Perfect Web Writing – How To Improve Your Skills
When you are trying to write articles for the web, it is very easy to relax a bit if you have had quite a lot of successful work, and just do the bare minimum to get paid. In fact you should be doing the opposite, as the harder you work at it, the more likely you are to be employed again and next time it could be at a higher rate. So what should you do to make sure that you keep improving your skills?
Firstly try to write for a lot of different audiences. This will give you practice in a lot of styles and keep you thinking in different ways about your writing. Your writing will seem more fresh and vibrant and will be more interesting as a result. If you are writing a wide range of articles you will also be having to do more research. Reading different sites about different subjects will also help you improve your style as you will be seeing how other people are writing and what they are doing to keep their work interesting.
Secondly you can never work enough at your grammar, spelling and sentence construction. If you try to learn new words every day you will also be able to increase your vocabulary and as a result your writing will become more interesting, simply because you are able to drop in a lot of different words, and that will make it a more absorbing read. You need to make sure that you always spell properly – put your work into a spell checker before you submit it. Some words won’t be picked up, as even if you spelt them wrong, or mistyped them, they still may not be picked up as the word may mean something else. You also may be accused of spelling words wrongly if you are writing for an American audience and you are using English spellings of words, so be sure you know who it is aimed for before you start. You also need to make sure that you proof read anything you have written before you submit it to the person who asked you for it, just in case it contains any silly errors that your spell checker hasn’t picked up. If you are having difficulty with your grammar then there are plenty of sites on the internet that can help you with this.
If you get any articles rejected then try to find out why this was. If you have a reason why then you can work on this ready for your next attempt. If you aren’t sure if it is any better then find someone who you know is a good writer and ask them to check it over for you. It is always worth getting a second opinion if you aren’t sure about anything and then you will at least know it makes sense first. Otherwise it may end up being rejected just for a couple of simple errors which you could easily have corrected.
