How to build an income as a web writer when you are a beginner
If you are just starting out as a web writer it may be difficult to know where exactly to start. You might think that you can get work if you contact the big magazines and newspapers that are online and send them some of your work. However, they are much more likely to either use articles written by their staff or buy items from an agency that they always use rather than take work on from freelancers. However, if you don’t mind doing work for a range of different people and starting to earn at a low rate, there is a lot of potential work for you.
Take a look at websites and forums about writing. There are a lot of people on the web who are looking for people to write articles to advertise their products or websites, or want to fill their blog full of a range of posts but don’t have the time or skills to write these themselves. You just need to know where to look for these people in order to start writing. Many won’t even mind if you have no experience, they will allow you write a few things for them to see how you do, and pay you if you like them. You might have to experience being rejected a few times because you may not understand what they want, but as you go on, you will find it easier to write for different people, and also learn which sort of people are the easiest to work for.
Take a look at online forums about writing and you will find a lot of links to places which advertise for writers and where you can advertise yourself as someone who is interested in writing for others. Some of these will ask you to note down how much you want to earn. Don’t set your price too high if you are inexperienced as you are unlikely to get much work. Look around at what other people are charging and choose a similar rate. Once you have been writing for a while and you are trusted, you will be able to demand a higher rate for whatever you write. You might have to start writing about subjects you have no interest in, but as you get more in demand you will be able to be more fussy about the work you take on.
You will need to be prepared to start small and write just a few words for a small income to begin with. You can’t expect to make a lot of money right at the beginning of your writing career and you will need to make sure that you learn from your mistakes. If you get any work rejected or any negative feedback, make sure that you read what the person has to say and that you learn from it, so that you can improve on this next time. Then you will be more likely to have your work accepted next time and your income will slowly build up, until you might be able to work at web writing full time and make yourself a career out of it.
